
Constance Marie Lopez was born and raised in
East Los Angeles, California, a third-generation
Mexican-American.
[1] that moved from apartment to apartment, and she was raised by her mother, who was an
artist[2] and grandmother. While still in her teens, she began dancing and by age 19 she got a job tap-dancing in a musical in
Japan by
Ryuichi Sakamoto called "Cosmopolis". When she returned to
Los Angeles, her career took a huge step when she was spotted in a club by a
dance choreographer for pop icon
David Bowie and started her career as a dancer on his
Glass Spider Tour.
After arriving back from the tour, she was cast in a small role in the movie
Salsa. After that, the film's choreographer introduced her to
Steve Tisch, who gave her first acting job. She played
Penny Rivera on CBS' television version of
Dirty Dancing. She later won the role of
Nikki Alvarez on the soap opera
Santa Barbara. Constance Marie later appeared in
Gregory Nava's film
My Family. She played agent Toni Brigatti on Early Edition alongside
Kyle Chandler. She was featured in the 1997 biographical film
Selena opposite
Jennifer Lopez in which she played Selena's mother, but under heavy make-up to make her look significantly older than the only four years younger Lopez. Another film credit was
Tortilla Soup, in which she played a divorced mother. In 1997, she was cast in the short-lived NBC sitcom
Union Square. She has guest-starred on many television shows such as
FOX's
Ally McBeal. She played
Angie Lopez on the
ABC sitcom
George Lopez until its cancellation in 2007. From 2002 until 2004 she played Nina Gonzales on the critically-acclaimed
PBS miniseries
American Family. She made a guest appearance as herself on an episode of
Statler and Waldorf: From the Balcony. She has volunteered as an actress with the
Young Storytellers Foundation. More recently, she did an episode of "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" as Marc Molina's wife, Virginia Molina.
Marie is engaged to yoga coach Kent Katich. They have a daughter, Luna Marie, born on February 5, 2009. in
Santa Monica, California.
